To conclude this ‘This is how google thinks‘ series let’s take a final look at how Google has ranked the search results for these posts added within the last 2-3 days:
- Tweaking your page titles
- Great 2016 WordPress backup plugins
- Bonus analysis: This is how google thinks
The first posts in our list, ‘Tweaking your page titles’ is still showing in the first page of search results at the bottom. We believe this may climb the more influence the post gets from being viewed, bookmarked etc. If this was your post you should feel a sense of accomplishment with your ranking as being on the first page of search results is a great place to be. It is also worth mentioning that ranking well and being trusted by Google comes from the love and support of your social networks. Our Twitter fans responded well to the post and this will add weight to how Google positions you in search results.
The post ‘Great 2016 WordPress backup plugins’ has remained today in the middle of page number 3 of search results. We believe this mediocre search ranking is due to the change we did from renaming the original page that had the same content (just nod). The digital brain processes every digit it is fed and so beware when making changes that your website page (unless you have blocked it) is being indexed automatically and the information you have altered will be taken note of by search engines. You also must keep checking your search ranking to study what is happening to a post or page. It could be that the words you have chosen for your title are being weakened by other websites who may not have the exact wording in the page titles but they may be competing for the same wording in their meta and page information. If their site is higher ranked than yours they will win the search ranking game every time. The best advice with reacting to a bad blog posts ranking is to create a brand new one with new content (do not use the same content or Google will bite). However if your are trying to rank well for a main page in your website then be clever how you are tweaking the page and continue watching its ranking grow until it is as high as you can get it. Remember if you are trying to rank a page titled ‘About Us’ you will never rank number one if competing with the likes of Virgin, Apple or CocaCola!
The post series called ‘This is how Google thinks’ is another interesting unraveling with regards to how Google search thinks. First of all it is worth noting that it is not great to have too many posts with the exact same keywords in the title. So if you are creating a series of posts perhaps link them with tags or a category instead of naming them the same. We only did this to test and show you how Google thinks. Therefore, if you are creating a series of posts related to one subject, you have to be inventive with the keyword and meta information if you want to rank well with the likes of the Yoast WordPress plugin.
So, where did ‘This is how Google thinks’ come in the search results? A lowly bottom of page 5!! Why? We think it is purely the title is too full of stop words:
- Stop words are words or adjectives which people use a lot! Call it “wood for trees” syndrome for search engines. There are simply too many to sort through and rank well. They will most likely hinder your SEO efforts. Words such as, ‘the ‘ , ‘or’, ‘at’ etc. mess up your SEO efforts because they use up precious character space, especially when creating page titles.
BUT! We have a nifty trick up our sleeves which has save the day, in terms of getting people to know about the Cn brand. If you look at page 1 of the search results you will see that our Vimeo videos have ranked well, thanks to Vimeo’s clout. So another ‘SEO Insurance Tactic’ to remember is to link to externally well ranked websites which can help boost your brand.
We hope you have enjoyed this 3 part series. Thank you for your time. Good luck in your ranking!
