Great 2017 WordPress backup plugins
is the focus question for this blog post. It is a straight forward question so let’s give you a straight forward answer starting with a quick list of the four best ones we have tried:
Plugins which say they are being used by over half a million websites are always a fairly safe bet to use yourself. BackupBuddy (by iThemes) is one of those WordPress plugins.
One this page they show a very helpful moving image which demonstrates how the plugin works once you install and click to use it. We love the way it moves you through the steps of the backup so you can clearly see where you are at each step of the way.
If you are looking for a plugin that backs up every aspect of your WordPress website, from the database to all the images. Then BackupBuddy could be for you. These are the common features you can expect:
- Backup files and database
- Schedule backups
- Store backups offsite (lots of options)
- Restore backups easily
- Support by private ticket
$80.00-297.00 per year
You cannot go far wrong with this plugin. It does what you need it to do. The company is well established so the risk of them closing down any time soon is low. Your data and contract should be in safe hands. As with all four of these plugins, the final decision will be which plugin suits your way of thinking and working online.
We get a little buzz when we use CodeGuard. It just has that well thought out geek feeling straight away. It is more than just a backup plugin because it also monitors your website for any changes. If something happens it will alert you instantly. It also backs up your website again after every change so you will get a breadcrumb trail of each changed version. When you backup, the system will generate two lists of your site content, one of the versions is to be restored and one is of the current state of the site. These two merge to help make sure your latest backup avoids any issues with matching the correct data needed to provide a perfectly restored website. This all sounds complex but in essence it is done with a click of a button! These are the features you can expect:
- Backup files and database
- Constant automated / intelligent backups
- Store backups at CodeGuard itself
- Restore backups in 1 click
- Support forum to get help
$5.00-239.00 per month
If you are serious about monitoring your investment (think how much time and value your website has to you if it were to be lost) then CodeGuard is an obvious decision.
It is VERY hard to avoid the most energizing factor of UpdraftPlus. You only have to pay a one time fee and you can use it and you get all this:

With this single plugin, you’ll get multiple storage destinations, automatic backup, migrator, importer, enhanced reporting, no adverts, fix backup time, more files, more database options, multisite/network, WebDAV, Microsoft OneDrive, Copy.Com, SFTP/FTPS/SCP enhanced support for Dropbox (sub-folders), Rackspace Cloud Files, Amazon S3 (RRS) and Google Drive (sub-folders).

£54.00-111.00 one time only*
*Note if you want updates after 12 months you will have to pay for this. Annual upgrade deals will change. There is also a FREE basic option.
For the complete package it is hard to beat UpdraftPlus. It is easy to use and almost offers you the kitchen sink too!
For simplicity in the way this plugin is sold to you, VaultPress wins for most newbie WordPress users. The fact you are offered ‘Safekeeper Support’ which means, if you need it, a member of the team will help restore your website, is a strong factor in going with this plugin. Let’s face it restoring SQL can prove tricky and it is always great to know that someone is ready and able to help you when a backup restoration is needed. You also get spa protection from the well known Askimet service which will help make sure spam is kept to a minimum. This is what you will get:
- Spam protection from Askimet
- Daily backups
- Restoration of backups in a few clicks
- 30 day backup history
- Safekeeper support (expert help with anything)
$99.00-299.00 per month
*Note, you can get this price down to $55.00-$165.00 without Askimet.
The cost can mount up if you have multiple websites as the above price is only per website. We love the fact someone is available to help you should you need it so if that is a deciding factor this could be your choice.
We couldn’t not mention this great little WordPress plugin. Although it is only focused on Dropbox as the backup repository, this plugin gets a mention here because it does what is does well. What it does is backup your website to a DropBox (you will need to signup) account with great ease and speed. It is literally just a case of a few clicks, usually one click! We have been very impressed and for those on a budget, the fact it is free, well, come on! This is what you will get:
- Rapid DropBox backup and restore with 1 click
Well worth a try. It works well on slow servers too which makes it appealing.
